Visual novels are an important part of Otaku culture in Japan. Reaching peak popularity in the early 2000's, much of the harem style Anime you are familiar with has been adapted from visual novels. While often classified as "Games" these PC programs play more like choose your own adventure books. Many function as dating simulators.
